When Love Isn’t Enough – and That’s Okay…

Robert had been taking care of his wife Carol for three years before he called us. It never occurred to him to ask for help sooner.

He managed her medications, drove her to every appointment, and was there for every small daily task that had become harder for her to manage on her own. He did it without complaint. Carol was his person.

But Robert was dealing with his own health challenges. When we first spoke he was almost apologetic, like calling us meant he had failed her somehow.

What we talked through together was simple. Carol’s needs had grown beyond what one person, even the most devoted one, could safely manage alone. Getting her the right support wasn’t giving up. It was the most loving thing he could do for her.

Carol moved into a senior living community close to their home a few weeks later. Robert visits every afternoon. He told us it was the first time in years he felt like her husband again instead of her caregiver.

That’s what the right support can do. It doesn’t replace love. It gives love room to breathe.
