I met a client recently who had been taken for thousands of dollars.
It didn’t happen the way you might expect. There was no obvious scammer. No strange caller with an urgent story.
It was a local tech support company. They presented themselves as reputable and professional. They had good reviews. They looked legitimate in every way someone would think to check.
A Problem That Didn’t Exist
They told him he had been hacked. He hadn’t been.
They convinced him his laptop was compromised. They told him he was in danger. They said he needed a long list of services and protections to fix it.
Then they told him he needed to upgrade his computer, at a cost higher than simply buying a new one.
He paid. He paid a lot. He paid for things he did not need and would never use.
He is in his 80s. He lives alone. And he had no one he trusted to check with.
That last part is the whole story.
The Scammer’s Real Advantage Is Isolation
Most seniors who get taken advantage of are not foolish. They are not careless.
They are simply alone in the moment when someone applies pressure. They have no one they trust to check with.
The scammer’s real advantage is not technical skill. It is isolation.
Why We Offer Digital Coaching
This is exactly why we offer Digital Coaching for seniors. Not because technology is scary. And not because seniors can’t learn.
It’s because everyone deserves someone in their corner they can ask before they hand over money.
Our coaching is patient, private, and one on one. We help with the everyday things: smartphones, video calls with family, email, and staying safe online.
We also help with moments exactly like this one. Someone tells you your computer has a virus. Or your account is at risk. Or you need an expensive upgrade right now. In those moments, you deserve a calm second opinion from someone on your side.
How to Spot This Kind of Scam
Here are a few things worth knowing, and worth sharing with the seniors in your life.
A real security problem almost never announces itself with urgency and a payment demand. Legitimate companies do not pressure you to decide immediately.
If anyone tells you that you have been hacked and you need to pay right now to fix it, that alone is a reason to stop and check with someone you trust.
And if the cost of a repair or upgrade comes close to the price of simply buying new, that is worth a second opinion too.
You do not have to become an expert. You just need someone you trust to ask.
If you or someone you love could use a patient, private, and judgment free resource for technology questions, we would be glad to help.
